A Y cable/connector is a self deshere ing name of a type of cable containing three ends of which one is a common end that in turn leads to a split into the remaining two ends. When looked upon, a Y-cable can resemble the Latin letter "Y".
When using Portable devices like Hard Drive, SSD(Solid State Drive). When an hard disk/ SSD are working on there full swing they may lack some power from your computer's USB port. Which are the only source of power for these Portable devices.
practically an USB 2.0 port supplies a current of 500mA, but these advanced high speed devices require current of 660mA to 800mA. This causes disconnection of the devices while reading /writing of data, Which is very irritating :X
But this is not a big problem with an USB 3.0 port as its supply is up to 1A.. (But earlier versions of USB 3.0 has shown the same disconnection problem )
This problem can be overcome by using a Y Power Cable/Connector. It is similar to normal USB cable/connector but the only difference is it has one more USB male(secondary) pin to give extra power from other USB port, when the primary supply gets insufficient power.
Make your own Y-Connector. Click here http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dCnhb8BfVfg
